Notes

David S. Crump, 65 of Raleigh passed away peacefully at home on September 25, 2014 with his beloved wife Marty and his faithful dog, Banjo close at his side. David was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme brain cancer in July of 2011 and he and his wife fought a long and courageous battle with his disease right up until the end.

David was born in Catawba County to his parents, Amos Paul and Artie Sue Crump who predeceased him. He was also predeceased by his sister, Paula Beth Ribelin.
David received his undergraduate degree at UNC in 1971 and his law degree at UNC Law School in 1974. He was hired at the North Carolina Department of Justice by Robert Morgan and he worked closely with Rufus Edmisten for many years. After leaving the Department of Justice, David practiced law in Raleigh where he had many clients in the area that he thought very highly of. He will be remembered for his intelligence and quick wit and his compassion for people who were in trouble and needed his expertise, whether they were clients, friends, or family. David was an avid sailor. He also did lovely leather tooling and work and was the President of the Raleigh Leatherworker’s Guild.

David is survived by his wife and companion of many years, Martha “Marty” Crump, brother, John Crump of Raleigh, Nephews Nathan and Tim Ribelin and their families of Texas, his faithful and loving cannine companions Banjo, Reesie Cup and Daisy, Uncles and cousins in Catawba County and by Marty’s family in Guilford and Randolph County.

There will be a memorial service and celebration of David’s life at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 9, 2014 at Trinity Baptist Church in the Chapel where he and his wife were married and the family will receive in the church parlor after the service.

Marty would like to thank the doctors and caregivers at Duke Raleigh Hospital for their wonderful care of David during his final days. Special thanks to Dr. Michael Spiritos at Duke Raleigh Hospital and to Dr. Gordona Vlahovic at the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Clinic at Duke University, Durham. In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Crump would ask that donations be made to Tisch Brain Tumor Clinic at Duke, Attention: Angels Among Us, DUMC 3624, Durham, NC 27710

When I think of memorable characters in my life, David Crump is at the top of my short list. His humor, intelligence, and sarcastic good nature were always an inspiration to me and I adore him so much.

I initially met and contracted David to represent a business I was with at the time, then when I left that business and informed David that I was looking for work, he offered me a similar position in his office as his assistant. Anyone that knows David's filing style in his office, knows that it was comprised of many stacks of documents on the desk, floor, chairs, etc. It was a perfect place for me to use my organizational skills!

David always kept me laughing at his jokes and unparalleled sarcasm when "dealing with idiots"... I learned a lot about communicating sarcasm and humor elegantly through David and appreciate other life lessons that have steered my life ship since then.

We have all benefited greatly by David's time on earth with us and it saddens me that his laughter and brilliance will no longer grace us. I have no doubt that he is still with us all in spirit and that he is sailing to his heart's content in the big blue <3

Happy sailing my friend,

Shavonne Gibson

David and I graduated from Newton-Conover High School together. He was always so smart and a genuinely nice guy. You just knew he had a bright future in front of him. I'm so sorry for your loss Marty. It's so hard being a caretaker for a loved one. God bless you. My thoughts and prayers go out to you.

David was a customer of mine for 10 years. I always enjoyed coming by his office to talk to him . And he would take time out of his busy day to talk to me. Sorry for your loss. Let's all say a prayer for him and thank God that we got to know him.

David, was as honest as honest could be and that is rare thing in people these days. I will miss his sense of humor and coolness. My thoughts are with Marty and his brother today. I'm so sorry for your loss.

David was one of those people about which no one felt ambivalent. A big personality, compassionate human being, and great mentor. I miss him. And I'll always regret that he and Marty didn't make it to New Orleans to eat with me.

I met David when he was my grand father's attorney when he had office downtown and once he moved to wake forest road I knew him as corporate attorney, friend, some one to enjoy talking to. He was some one who was always there for you when you needed an idea reviewed or needed something in court, I know Marty my and family send you all our sympathy and prayer now in this time of loss. He was next to grandpa jack the most incredible person this world has seen in a man. It's hard to imagine not ever hearing that voice on the phone ever again.

David Crump loved everybody, and everybody loved David. Never a dull moment, never a cross word, never anything but that pure, positive energy that was David's unmistakable persona. I last saw Marty and David at the Eno Festival this summer, where he was happy and enjoying himself in the full embrace of nature, music and love. David taught me many things, and nobody can do more than that for another person. While I will always remember David and miss him, I will always retain the inspiration of his spontaneous warmth, joy and lovingkindness to all and everyone he met.

David was my corporate attorney for 21 years. He was my counselor, my friend, my mentor, my confidante. David never hesitated to help me with any problem, any concern, He was so much fun to sit and talk with. His humor and wit were unmatched. There are not enough words to celebrate his life! He always took the time to do whatever he could and he could handle anything. So many will miss him so very much. A few months ago I told his dear Marty that there was only one David ... God broke the mold when he created this wonderful man. I know he is in a much better place but many hearts will miss him so, including his dear Banjo. So sad to know that none of us will see that sweet, sincere smile and hear that belly laugh until we one day see him again in Paradise. God bless you dear Marty. You are forever in my prayers.

Not only was David the most knowledgeable attorney I have known, he was good and humble and kind. There were so many things he did for me that it is impossible to name them all here. Most of all I recall him, ravaged by cancer and the ill effects of his treatment, coming from his bed to the courthouse for me to argue a motion on my behalf. You know, we look to Christ to model our lives upon, yet that example is often beyond our reach to emulate. Let us instead follow the example of David Crump and be good, humble and kind to each other.
